My Faithful Lord, our newspapers today contain stories about sexual escapades, secret rendezvous, and extra marital affairs. Society promotes sexual freedom, perversion, and commitment to one person as being “old-fashioned.” Sex, created by You and pronounced as good, has been deliberately perverted. It has been turned into a twisted, exploited, illicit and self-gratifying activity. Love has been turned into lust, using others, and “no strings attached.” In reality, the physical and emotional union of a male and female, should be a holy expression of “true” love, producing children, experiencing pleasure in the right way and requiring a commitment. There is no doubt that You think sex is an important part of a married relationship and You provide mankind with guidelines for its use and warnings about its misuse. The marriage relationship is symbolic of Your intimate relation with mankind.
The union of a man and a woman in the Sacrament of Matrimony must be motivated by “true” love and commitment, not lust. It is for mutual pleasure, not selfish enjoyment. Since marital love is such a powerful expression of feelings and commitment between two people, it must not be regarded casually. While romance keeps a marriage interesting, commitment is the real glue that keeps marriages together. The commitment is not based on my spouse pleasing me, but a result of a daily effort to put them ahead of what I want. Loving my spouse should make me feel like they are beautiful and special. I must look for qualities in a spouse that do not fade over time … spirituality, integrity, sensitivity and selflessness. Through candid communication, I can maintain a close relationship with You and my spouse. I must work hard not to let walls be built between me and my spouse and me and You.
Feelings of love can create a desire for intimacy that overpowers reason. Too often, we develop intimate relations based on our feelings. But feelings are not strong enough to sustain a lasting relationship. Patience is needed to allow “true” love and commitment to develop in harmony with each other. I should never let problems, conflicts and external factors ruin my ability to enjoy the gift You have given to me and my spouse. In a lasting marriage, things that cause problems between me and my spouse should be removed. You praise “virginity” but it is deemed “old-fashioned” today. You have always deemed it a key ingredient of a successful marriage. Sex without marriage is made cheap and leads to sadness. Nothing compares to giving oneself completely and unselfishly to another. I know with You in my life, I will keep love and marriage in perspective. And its in Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN!!
Song of Solomon 7:10 I belong to my lover and his desire is for me.
